not just okay, but necessary
kids of my generation share and read and write this kind of thing all the time.
What’s the difference between sex and masturbation? Sex involves an exchange – ideally an exchange of emotional energy, less ideally a nasty case of crabs – either way, you come away from the experience with something you did not have before. Masturbation is a self-contained activity that results in nothing but pleasure. Which is good / wonderful, but obviously no substitute for sex.
when I find myself reading the same ideas all the time, the same narrative in different stories, the same complaints, I know I’m learning nothing new.
They may be right, but they’re not telling me anything I don’t already know.
it’s like, look, we get it, 2+2 = 4. let’s stop arguing about that and move on to differential equations.
Sexism is bad, political corruption is bad, bullying is bad, no one can dispute that. We need move on to what we can do about it.
And this is where we could go wrong. We will go wrong because we don’t know what the answers are. We will make mistakes and learn. After differential equations, it’s on to cold fusion.
We can forge ahead into uncertainty together, learn from our mistakes and look after each other.
Or we can keep masturbating. Saying, “2+2=4!!!” and basking in the approval of everyone who agrees. While insulting the people who dare to try solving. the harder problems. Criticising their mistakes. dismissing their progress, as we ourselves stagnate in useless righteousness.
